How to register for the Feed-In Tariff scheme

To register for Feed-In Tariffs for units below 50kW, both the unit and the installer must be certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

Non-MCS certified wind, solar or hydro installations of 50kW or less will not be eligible for Feed-In Tariffs. These registrations are collated on central database held by a central authority, (Ofgem - http://www.ofgem.gov.uk) so there are no adverse effects if a user switches their utility company.

Installations put in place prior to April 1st 2010 can still be eligible to register for Feed-In Tariffs. If the system was previously registered for the Renewables Obligation (RO) then the user should get notification from Ofgem, their utility provider or the agent/company that originally registered them for the RO.

Installations not originally registered for the RO and installed before the 15th July 2009 are now ineligible for registration.

There are two Feed-In Tariff registration streams. Which one you take depends on the capacity and type of your installation. Wind, solar or hydro-based installations up to 50kW need to be certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. Installations above 50kW will need to apply to Ofgem for accreditation through its Renewable and CHP Register. In both instances, suppliers such as BritishEco will be able to help and offer advice on how to register for Feed-In Tariffs.
