Green Energy UK Regulations and the Feed-In Tariffs scheme
The UK energy market is subject to immense amounts of regulation. Ofgem, the official independent body that oversees the UK energy market, is involved in many different activities - some at the research stage - that have been developed to create a greener society. They range from cleaner ways of generating power to more efficient ways of using it.
Recently, Ofgem published the conclusions of 'Project Discovery', a document that outlines proposals to reform the electricity market, including the achievement of environmental objectives. This is just one small part of an increasing range of initiatives aimed at fostering, supporting and promoting green energy in the UK - the Feed-In Tariffs scheme is one such example.
Renewable green energy is a vital cog in the fight against climate change and the move to a carbon-zero electricity system is essential if the UK is to reach an 80% reduction in CO2 by 2050. Feed-in Tariffs, as an incentive-based scheme, are designed to help towards delivering renewable electricity as efficiently as possible are important to achieving this goal in the interests of existing and future consumers. The aim is to increase the deployment of renewable UK green electricity generation to achieve a target of a 30% share of total generation by 2020.
